I'd assume he was playing normal mode if he never messed with options. Level 60 sounds about right though, least in some Tales games. I am curious what the level cap is cause most Tales games have it at 255, IIRC. Never raised my team to max level.

Since I don't know japanese I only know easy, normal, and hard like this
3 letter word= normal
really long word= hard
other word= easy.
Plus I tested each one out by scanning the same enemy 3 times. If the HP was higher then normal, it was hard mode. If they died really fast it was easy mode.

The third option on the settings menu (second from the bottom) is your difficulty.
Your choices are:
Yasashi (やさしい）: Easy
Futsuu （ふつう）: Normal
Muzukashii （むずかしい）: Difficult.
The last option on the menu is "Battle Camera".
Options:
Party (パーティ): Keeps all of the party characters in view.
Enemy (エネミー): Camera focuses on the enemies.
All （オール）： Displays all the characters.
Target (ターゲット): Camera displays your character and your target.

Least my guesses were right on which was which, so I'm glad to know I am really on Hard mode.
